Clothing and Equipment Checklist- Waterfall Ice Climbing Courses

Required equipment: (Please contact B.B.A. with any questions prior to course)
__ Mountaineering Boots. Plastic mountaineering boots or leather climbing boots. Rigid-soled boots that accept rigid step-in crampons.
__ Crampons - Rigid , step-in crampons with vertically-oriented front points are best for waterfall ice climbing.
__ Ice axes - 2 technical ice climbing axes- straight or bent shaft with recurved picks.  Preferably 1 with adze and 1 with hammer.*
__ Climbing Harness - With adjustable leg loops, fits over winter clothing. You should look for a lightweight harness that can be put on while wearing boots and crampons. *
__ Locking "Pear shaped" carabiner and belay device. Avoid "Autolock" carabiners. *
__ Extra locking carabiner. *

Clothing:
__ Lightweight polyester balaclava
__ Thick fleece or wool hat
__ Waterproof/ breathable jacket with hood
__ Windproof or waterproof/ breathable pants.
__ Long Underwear (1 set of top and bottom). Polyester, polypropylene, or wool. NO COTTON!
__ Upper body Insulation Layers. 2 layers-  fleece jackets , wool sweaters, and/or down or synthetic fill jacket.
__ Lower body Insulation Layers. 1 layer. Lightweight stretch nylon, fleece or wool pants.
__ Socks- wool or synthetic.  It is best to have two layers that can be worn together, but they need to fit your boots. If they’re too tight inside, your feet will get cold easily. Don’t squeeze an extra pair inside thinking it will keep your feet warmer. If you’re renting boots, try them on with two relatively thick socks, to minimize problems with blisters. We recommend Patagonia, ThorLo, and Smartwool socks.
__ Thick wool or fleece gloves or mittens. They should be very warm, but dexterous enough to manipulate equipment and clothing. Mittens are warmer, but gloves are easier to climb in.
__ Overmitts or gloves. Waterproof/ breathable overmitts that are contoured to the shape of your hand and fit over your heavy wool or fleece gloves or mittens.
__ Lightweight fleece gloves or liner gloves - Lightweight fleece gloves or liner gloves that fit inside your warm gloves and overmitts.

__ Miscellaneous Equipment:
__ Pack
– large enough to hold all of the above clothing and equipment.
__ Ski Goggles
__ Sunglasses.
__ Gaiters. Calf length nylon gaiters  or "Super" gaiters that attach directly to boot with a rubber rand.
__ Headlamp or small flashlight
__ Water Bottles and/or thermos: 1 to 2 liters
__ Snack/Lunch Food. Bring high-energy snacks that will keep you going all day. Crackers and cheese, trail mix, chocolate bars, energy bars, cookies, and dried fruit are all good.

*B.B.A. will provide these items if needed.
